CIRCA 1913, MARKED WITH UNDERGLAZE BLUE SCEPTRE, RED OVERGLAZE ORB ABOVE KPM, THE IRON CROSS IN BLACK, AND TSB IN GREEN FOR THEODOR SCHMUZ-BAUDISS, VARIOUS OVERGLAZE AND IMPRESSED NUMERALS
The white ground moulded in relief and enhanced in gilt with the Ceres decoration, the borders with stylised laurel wreaths and cornucopiae, the handles moulded as cornucopiae, the domed covers with upright cornucopia finials, comprising:
-a large circular two-handled shallow tureen and cover, 33.5 cm. wide;
-a circular bulbous tureen and cover, 27.8 cm. wide;
-an ajour pedestal coupe, 12.8 cm. high;
-a single-handed circular suaceboat and cover on fixed oval stand, 21 cm. wide;
-a large spoon;
-a pair of small two-handled double-lipped sauceboats on fixed circular stand, 12 cm. high;
-a pair of small spoons;
-a deep square bowl, 23.5 cm. wide;
-a square dish, 22.8 cm. wide;
-two large oval dishes, 46.5 and 47 cm. wide;
-a large two-handled circular dish, 36.3 cm. wide;
-a large circular dish, 32.5 cm. diam.;
-twelve soup plates, 25.3 cm. diam.;
-twenty-four dinner plates, circa 25.5 cm. diam.;
-twelve ajour fruit plates, 21.5 cm. diam.;
-twelve dessert plates, 21.8 cm. diam.;

Lot Essay

This service was designed by Theodor Schmuz-Baudiss in 1913, who became director of the Berlin factory in 1912. It is regarded today as probably the most prominent Jugendstil service produced by the K.P.M. factory. Its name comes from the relief motifs depicting the attributes of Ceres, the Roman goddess of fertility and agriculture.
