Burton's letter is presumably written to James Outram, who in 1854 became the first political resident at Aden. Burton states that he is pleased to report that within a week he will be able to start for Berbera. He details his plans of travel for the next several weeks: "From Berbera I shall do myself the honor of writing to you the capabilities of the plan as regards water. Lt. Herne has pitched his tent upon the spot where I directed him to dig and will... with difficulty... gain the permission of the people." He forwards news of the Turkish edict on slave-trading. This letter was written just two weeks before Burton's meeting with Speke and the attack on them both by tribesmen (detailed in lot 12).
