DELUDED HOPES. A misinformed Ismail writes a congratulatory note to Gordon's sister about her brother's safe rescue from danger at Khartoum. He is greatly relieved that "the valiant soldier...mon ami Gordon" has been "delivered from the dangers that beset him." No such deliverance ever occurred, and Gordon met his death just three months later.
