DOUGHTY, Charles (1843-1926). Autograph letter signed ("Charles M. Doughty") to Robert Bridges, Beirut, 27 October 1888. 1 page, 4to.

DOUGHTY DESCRIBES HIS PLANNED TRAVELS. Doughty writes to Bridges from Beirut and outlines his future travels: "Leaving this soon after the beginning of the New Year, we go to settle ourselves at Bordighera or in the neighbourhood, on the Riviera... We may not be in England for a year or two, but remain in Italy... We are about setting out for Tyre, Sidon, Acre, Carmel, Nazareth and the Lake of Galilee--our final journey in this land, that my wife may see these places, and make sketches." Robert Bridges was the Poet Laureate of England. Doughty's travels led him through the Continent, North Africa and Arabia. He was present at the eruption of Vesuvius in August 1872, an experience he described in his monumental account of his journeys, Travels in Arabia Deserta, 1888.
