LAWRENCE, T.E. (1888-1935). Autograph letter signed ("T.E. Lawrence") to Woods of the Daily Express, All Souls College, Oxford, 29 August 1920. 3 pages, 8vo.
Lawrence gently chides the reporter for having "interviewed" him when they talked over "the things you [Woods] intended to put into future leaders," and discusses his mixed views on the Percy Cox Commission, including his confidence in the Harry St. John Philby appointment. "The Percy Cox mission is an improvement. Philby is a real man, & if allowed to can deal with the whole situation. Cox doesn't count, except as a dignified figure-head. He has chosen Frank Balfour as his civil secretary (a reactionary) and as his private secretary a man called Garbett, of the India Office, a dull fellow, who has been largely responsible for the support that Col. A.T. Wilson has received from London. The Garbett appointment is a very bad one: the Philby appointment a very good one; but of course Cox makes such things blindly, without the equipment to choose the best men. However I have great faith in Philby..."
