Lot Essay

These panels were reputedly removed from the ballroom of the mansion of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, on New York's Fifth Avenue, on its demolition in 1926. The interior had been based on the magnificent Louis XV panelling in the Hotel de Valois in Paris, (now the Bank of France).
