This trunk is illustrated in Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, p.358, fig.3.363.
The author comments that this is one of the standard products of the coffer or trunk maker; such trunks were made over a long period of time and were covered in a variety of materials including leather, seal skin, horse hide, velvet, embroidered cloth and turkey work. The interiors were usually lined with cloth or marbled paper.
