A WEST COUNTRY OAK TESTER BEDSTEAD
17th century, probably Gloucestershire
The panelled tester with fourteen panels carved with rosette-centred geometrical motifs and two smaller horizontal panels with lunette carving, raised on foliate-carved bulbous columns and later square section posts joined by a later end rail, the headboard with four plain lower panels and a profusely carved upper section with twin arcaded panels depicting a tree of life and flanked by figures, all below a frieze of carved dragon or serpent-like creatures flanking a cartouche, the arcaded panels and corner quadrants with black paint decoration, raised in height
