The rectangular hinged top with green baize-lined playing-surface, above a blind fretwork frieze, on square blind fret chamfered legs

Lot Essay

Such fretwork, both pierced and 'blind' appeared on an elaborate suite of furniture known as the 'Weller-Poley' suite, sold by the Trustees of the J. H. Weller-Poley Will Trust, in these Rooms, 3 July 1997. A pair of card-table from the suite (lot 23) was sold for £38,900. Such 'Gothick' fretwork designs featured on chair-patterns in Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pl. XXIV.
