The rectangular later Portoro marble top above a gadrooned and fluted frieze centred by a shell issuing foliage, on lion-headed fluted tapering legs with hairy paw feet, with depository label inscribed '62', previously a stand

Lot Essay

The stand is supported by lion-headed and antique-fluted herms in the Roman manner popularised by William Kent (d. 1748) and resembles those on a 'Chippendale' desk purchased in 1948 by the Victoria & Albert Museum (R. Edwards, Georgian Furniture, London, 1951, fig. 38).
