Lot Essay

The wardrobe, designed in the antiquarian fashion, is richly carved in the 17th century Flemish manner and relates to the traditional French marriage 'armoire'. The mosaiced compartments of its doors include crown-bearing cherubs hovering above a relief carving of figures making their marriage vows. Its frieze is carved in the Louis XIV 'Roman' fashion with birds perched amongst meandering acanthus and attending a 'Venus' shell and fruit-basket emblematic of Abundance.
