A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT WARDROBE
ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, SECOND QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
The rectangular central breakfront section surmounted by scrolling foliage, flanked by conforming wings, above a pair of arched panelled doors enclosing a hanging space with eleven pegs and five ash-lined drawers, the uppermost drawer simulated as two, flanked by conforming wings enclosing hanging spaces with a brass hanging-rail, on a plinth base, the locks stamped 'R' in an oval 'PATENT', with chalk inscription on the reverse 'LADY JARDINE HILL HOUSE, CHOBHAM WARDROBE ...'

Lot Essay

The wardrobe, with arched panels of flame-figured mahogany and robustly carved pediment, is designed in the George IV Grecian fashion and relates to a pattern for a 'Ladies Dwarf Wardrobe' in George Smith's, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1826, pl. CVIII.
