CIRCA 1790, ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS, THE LATER DECORATION BY JOHN FOWLER
Decorated overall with floral sprays, the dressing-mirror with later oval plate in a cartouche-shaped frame, on shaped legs, the matching hand-mirror with oval plate and pierced ellipse handle, the fawn velvet-lined reverse decorated with a floral cypher 'EK' [for Elizabeth Kaye]
The dressing-mirror: 28 in. (71 cm.) high; 18¼ in. (46 cm.) wide; 8½ in. (22 cm.) deep
The hand mirror: 18 x 9 in. (46 x 23 cm.) (2)

Lot Essay

The design for this japanned mirror, made for the Lancaster 'West India' merchant John Dilworth by Thomas Romney, features in the 1795 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster (no. 558) (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1780-1800, Royston, 1995, fig 196).
