Lot Essay

The wreathed medallion of a basket and flowers issuing from whorled Roman acanthus foliage reflects the Louis Quatorze 'antique' or 'Roman' style, and relates to inlaid work such as the 'flowered' table invoiced in 1685 for Levens Hall, Cumbria by Thomas Pistor (d. 1710) (A. Turpin, 'Thomas Pistor, Father and Son, and Levens Hall', Furniture History, 2000, pp. 43-60, figs. 1 and 4).
A cabinet-on-stand with related floral marquetry was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 20 October 1975, lot 112 and another with similar floral spandrels and shaped marquetry panels on the drawers, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 12 July 1996, lot 54.
