THIRD QUARTER 18TH CENTURY
The rectangular moulded cornice above a glazed door enclosing a green velvet-lined interior with three adjustable shelves, flanked by panelled doors enclosing pigeon-holes and mahogany-lined drawers, above a serpentine chest base with four graduated drawers, the top drawer with replaced baize-lined slide and divisions, on ogee bracket feet, the handles replaced, the reverse inscribed 'Mitchell' and with further indistinct chalk inscriptions, the top drawer previously with further divisions, previously with angle-brackets flanking the central cabinet

Lot Essay

Thomas Chippendale illustrated a design for a library bookcase with stepped breakfront cabinet and similar glazing pattern in his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pl. LXIX.
An identical secretaire or dressing-cabinet, retaining its pierced fretwork gallery with finials, is in the Noel Terry Collection, Fairfax House, York (P. Brown, The Noel Terry Collection of Furniture and Clocks, York, 1987, p. 43, fig. 43).
