4° (184 x 144mm). With the final blank; without the 2 leaves of errata found in a very few copies and probably of later issue. Metalcut ornamental initial opening each book. Owing to misimposition, text in Dd is printed on the wrong versos. (Quire Tt very lightly browned.) Contemporary limp vellum; modern half brown morocco slipcase. Provenance: Ellesmere Library at Bridgewater House (armorial bookplate; bulk of the library acquired en bloc in 1917 by:) -- Henry E. Huntington (Huntington Library duplicate stamp at end).
FIRST EDITION OF 'AN INTRINSICALLY IMPORTANT BOOK' (Pforzheimer). His only work published in English during his lifetime, it is 'a preparative or key for the opening of the Instauration (Grolier/Horblit), Bacon's projected comprehensive discussion of the sciences. The Advancement of Learning, one of Bacon's Two Bookes, is concerned with the classification of philosophy and the sciences and lay the foundations for his influential inductive method.
