PEPYS, Samuel (1633-1703). Memoires relating to the state of the Royal Navy of England, for ten years, determin'd December 1688. [London:] 1690.

8° (167 x 105mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by R. White after Sir Godfrey Kneller. Title in red and black within ruled lines, folding letterpress table between L4 and L5, first blank conjugate with the title present, B7 a cancel. Contemporary mottled calf, blind roll at spine, red speckled edges; modern green morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: contemporary manuscript corrections to 15 pages attributed to the author -- [Charles Sawyer, bookseller (catalogue description laid in)] -- purchased from James F. Drake, New York, 11 March 1941, $175.

AN IMPRESSIVELY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of the diarist's only acknowledged publication. 'Upon this he lavished a great deal of thought and care. It represents a side of Pepys's life which is apt to be ignored' (Pforzheimer). Pforzheimer surmised that copies which do not name the printer or publisher in the imprint may have been issued for presentation, a suggestion supported by the careful corrections made in the present copy and others of this issue (for instance, the Houghton copy, sold Christie's 11 June 1980, lot 369, and numerous others), possibly by Pepys himself. In another issue Griffin and Keble are named. The table gives 'A General State of Account, relating to the 400000,l, per annum payable out of the Exchequer to the Treasurer of the Navy.' Grolier, Wither to Prior 662; Pforzheimer 793; Wing P-1449.
