8° (155 x 190mm). Engraved frontispiece. Title in red and black. Contemporary calf, spine gilt (joints rubbed, abrasion on lower cover). Provenance: James Boswell (inscribed 'James Boswell Edinburgh 1779' on recto of front free endpaper) -- purchased from James F. Drake, New York, 14 August 1950, $40.

JAMES BOSWELL'S COPY of Bouhours' celebrated anthology, first published in Paris, 1689. In Edinburgh, Boswell had access to the Advocates' Library, and records using it for the preparation of his monthly paper, the Hypochondriack, serialised in the London Magazine (1777-1783). Roger Craik notes that Boswell also had a not insignificant library of his own, compiling a catalogue in the early 1770s of about 320 books; this included a 'History and Miscellanies' section that reflected his taste in both English and continental literature (R. Craik James Boswell: the Scottish Perspective, 1994, p. 147). The present volume would have been a cheap but useful addition to his library, a possible source of mottos for the Hypochondriack, rather than a book which required laborious reading -- no. 21 of the Hypochondriack, written in June 1779, took quotation as its subject (see Laird of Auchinleck 1778-1782, p. 111n). Boswell also owned a copy of Bouhours' Pensées Ingenieuses des Pères de l'Eglise (Amsterdam, 1700), also with the purchase date of 1779, now in the Rothschild Library. cf. Rothschild 475.
