GRAY, Thomas (1716-71) -- HIGGONS, Theophilus (c.1578-1659). Mystical Babylon; or, Papall Rome. London: William Stansby, for Matthew Lownes and William Barret, 1624.

4° (183 138mm). Metalcut headpieces and initials. (Outer margins faintly browned, small marginal stain in one leaf.) Contemporary gilt-tooled limp vellum, title written on spine upside-down (new endpapers). Provenance: THOMAS GRAY (signature on title) -- purchased from Charles Traylen, Guildford, Surrey, 20 August 1953, £30.

THE POET THOMAS GRAY'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. It forms a new addition to modern attempts to list the contents of Gray's library, hitherto eluding W.P. Jones ('Thomas Gray's Library', Modern Philology 35, 1938, pp.257-78) and the Index of English Literary Manuscripts. Gray bequeathed his library to William Mason, who in turn bequeathed his library to Richard Stonhewer [d.1809], who left most of the books to the Rev. Mr. Bright of Skeffington Hall, Leicestershire. The present volume was not in the 1845 Bright sale or in the sale on 28 August 1851 of a small selection of Gray material. STC 13455.
