MALTHUS, Thomas Robert (1766-1834). Definitions in Political Economy. London: John Murray, 1827.
8° (201 x 118mm). Uncut in original blue paper-covered boards with paper spine label (upper joints cracked and weak), morocco-backed green cloth case. Provenance: Pierre de Poletira (contemporary signature on front free endpaper) -- Joseph Harrison Jun. (bookplate) -- purchased from James F. Drake, New York, 20 January 1940, $25.
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL BOARDS of this late and little known paper by Malthus, arguing the need for an agreed terminology among political economists. Definitions themselves occupy only 27 of the book's 261 pages. 'Almost half of it was taken up with criticisms of the ambiguous and contradictory use of certain words by Adam Smith, Say, Ricardo, James Mill and McCulloch' which, rather to the ageing author's disappointment, were largely ignored by the reviewers (see Patricia James Population Malthus, 1979, p. 410). Goldsmiths' 25180; Kress C.1924.
