8° (185 x 120mm). Etched dedication leaf, etched head- and tail-pieces by the author. Quire M in vol. II erratically paginated (Margins soiled, one lower margin holed.) Contemporary blue cloth, spines titled in gilt, yellow glazed endpapers (rubbed, inner hinges split, endpapers discoloured), blue morocco-backed solander case by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Provenance: Mary Lamb (signature on both front free endpapers) -- John Gribbel (bookplate), sold Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1940, lot 387 for $15.
MARY LAMB'S COPY of Anna Jameson's Characteristics of Women, a series of essays on Shakespeare's female characters, dedicated to Fanny Kemble. An 'excellent' book, it clearly owed much to the precedent set by Charles and Mary Lamb's own Tales of Shakespeare (1807).
