ARNOLD, Matthew (1822-1888). New Poems. London: Macmillan, 1867.
8° (176 x 116mm). Publisher's device on half-title verso. Uncut in original green cloth by Burn, with binder's label at rear, front cover ruled in gilt, back cover in blind, gilt-lettered spine (stitching slightly weak). Provenance: Charles Kingsley (1819-1875, bookplate; pencil scoring and occasional annotations by [?]another family member). With a loosely-inserted letter from Arnold, one page, 8°, with 3 integral blanks, dated Cobham Surrey 26 March 1886, to Dr. Keningale Cook, regretting that he is too busy with his report on schools and 'a projected visit to America' to be able to review his book [presumably The Fathers of Jesus. A Study of the Lineage of Christian Doctrines and Traditions, published by Kegan, Paul, Trench in 2 volumes, 1886], 'even if it were my habit to review books.' Instead he will see that it 'is ordered to lie on the library table at the Athenaeum Club, where it will be seen by those who are more capable than I of judging it' (tear at lower left-hand corner and small smudge mark affecting name of the recipient).
FIRST EDITION, CHARLES KINGSLEY'S COPY. The annotations are not Kingsley's or his wife, Fanny's, but they do record Kingsley's interest in Arnold's 'Rugby Chapel.' Two stanzas of the poem are initialled 'CK,' and the annotation at the bottom of p. 193, 'Last sermon at Westminster Abbey 1874 -- November 28,' suggests that Kingsley used the poem as a text when giving his last sermon as Canon of Westminster; he died early in 1875. 'Dover Beach' was published in this volume for the first time. Smart p. 6.
