ARNOLD, Matthew (1822-1888). Saint Brandan. London: E.W. & A. Skipwith, '1867' [?1890]. 8° (187 x 128mm). Original brown wrappers printed in black, morocco-backed green cloth slipcase. A THOMAS WISE FORGERY. The poem was first published in Fraser's magazine, July 1860, and afterwards in New Poems, 1867. Carter and Pollard found the text type to be identical with six proved forgeries; neither the publisher's name nor that of the supposed printer, J.S. Seaton and Co., were to be found in Kelly's Directory for 1867. Carter and Pollard An Enquiry, p. 161; Todd Thomas J. Wise: Centenary Studies p. 82/3f; Ashley I, p. 10; Smart (1892) p. 14 (omitted from the 1904 2nd edition).
ARNOLD, Matthew. Geist's Grave. London: printed for only a few friends, '1881' [?1890]. 8° (174 x 131mm). 11[1]p. (Half-title browned.) Original lavender-grey printed wrappers (spine slightly torn), blue cloth case. Provenance: John Drinkwater (signature on title, dated 1921; morocco label). A THOMAS WISE FORGERY. The poem was first published in the Edinburgh Review, January 1881: some offprints of this, on 2 leaves only, were done for the author's use, making the whole raison d'etre of this pamphlet doubtful to Carter and Pollard. 'Though not a proved forgery, it must be declared highly suspicious.' Carter and Pollard An Enquiry p. 163; Todd Wise: Centenary Studies p. 82/4f; Ashley I, p. 11; Smart (1892) p. 12 (omitted from the 2nd edition).
