3 volumes, 8° (184 x 117mm). (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary blue morocco gilt, gilt edges (extremities lightly rubbed), in later blue half morocco case. Provenance: presentation copy from the author to Arthur Joseph Munby, the dedicatee (bookplate and pencil inscription 'This copy, specially bound for me, was given to me by my dear old friend, R.D. Blackmore,' signed by Munby and dated 1880) -- purchased from Raphael King, London, 12 November 1941, 5 guineas. Exhibited: Grolier Club (1950s exhibition label). With a tipped-in 11-line letter from R.D. Blackmore, dated Teddington November 29 1899, to an unknown gentleman, discussing his own ill health and the eye trouble suffered by his 'old and valued friend A.J. Munby,' also criticisng an attempt to market original manuscripts of his poetry ('What rogues to offer you that rubbish at £10! Three or four wretched verses, published years ago, in what paper I forget. 10d would be too much for them').
FIRST EDITION, THE DEDICATION COPY. R.D. Blackmore, one-time barrister and classical master at Wellesley House School, Twickenham, became famous as a novelist with his third work Lorna Doone. Another twelve novels followed, all written from his home in Teddington. Munby (1828-1910), the dedicatee of this novel, was his lifelong friend and himself a published poet. In turn he dedicated his Dorothy, a rural story in elegiac verse published anonymously in 1900, to Blackmore. Sadleir 229; Wolff 538. (3)
