Uncut in original brown cloth by Bone and Son, with binder's ticket at rear, decorated in blind, gilt-lettered spines, yellow endpapers, volume I partly unopened (vol. I and III with worn spines and inner hinges split), in common morocco-backed brown cloth case. Provenance: VOLUME I A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO ALEXANDER GILCHRIST -- volumes II-IV with ownership signature of Alexander Forbes, 1857 -- purchased from James F. Drake, New York, 15 March 1939, $65. Gilchrist, the recipient of volume I is best known for his life of William Blake, finished by his wife Anne. It was at Carlyle's express wish that the Gilchrists settled in Chelsea, living next door to him for a number of years. The essays were first collected in 1838-39. cf. Wead p. 15.
