CARLYLE, Thomas (1795-1881) -- SCHILLER, Friedrich (1759-1805). The Ghost-Seer or Apparitionist. An interesting fragment found among the pages of Count O***** [Geisterseher], translated by Daniel Boileau. London: Vernor and Hood, Leeds: Binn, and Hull: Rawson, 1795.
8° (161 x 93mm). (A little spotting and browning.) Contemporary half calf with morocco lettering-piece (rubbed, spine torn at head). Provenance: Thomas Carlyle, his gift to Thomas Woolner (second leaf inscribed in Carlyle's hand 'Thomas Woolner Esq from T. Carlyle Chelsea 23 Janr 1849') -- M.F. Middelton (booklabel).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. A SCARCE TRANSLATION AND IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY. Carlyle followed Coleridge as one of the great popularisers of German literature in England. His life of Schiller appeared in the London Magazine, 1823-24, and was separately published in 1825. Thomas Woolner (1825-1892), the recipient of this volume, was one of the original 'pre-Raphaelite Bretheren.' He executed a portrait medallion of Thomas, and was also 'greatly attached' to Jane Carlyle. His departure for the Australian goldfields in 1852 inspired Ford Madox Brown's picture 'The Last of England.'
