WILLIAM ROSSETTI'S COPY OF SUCKLING'S WORKS, ASSOCIATION COPY. The English author, Hartley Coleridge (1796-1849), was the eldest son of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. His Biographia Borealis, a series of sound critical biographies of Yorkshire and Lancashire worthies, appeared in 1833. The same year he published a small volume of poems, including some beautiful sonnets which established his literary reputation.

THACKERAY, William -- GAY, John (1685-1732). Fables. London: 1757. 2 volumes in 1, small 8° (140 x 88mm). Contemporary half calf (slightly rubbed, thumb soiling, small tears on title-page, some brown staining), brown morocco solander case. Provenance: William Makepeace Thackeray (inscribed on front endpaper 'W.M. Thackeray') -- John Gribbel, St. Austell Hall (bookplate).

WILLIAM THACKERAY'S COPY OF GAY'S FABLES. John Gay is perhaps remembered chiefly for his ballad opera, The Beggar's Opera (1728), a lighthearted story of highwaymen and thieves, which satirizes both the corruption of contemporary genteel society under the government of Sir Robert Walpole and the contemporary fashion for Italian opera. The Fables, which consists of two books of verse, were very popular among his generation. (2)
