THACKERAY, William Makepeace (1811-1863). Two drawings, apparently for Vanity Fair, n.d. [1847-48], showing a young woman standing in front of a fireplace, and seated on a sofa, lost in thought, in pencil on one leaf, oblong 8vo (light yellowing and traces of adhesive on verso); in a red morocco backed slipcase. Provenance: A. Edward Norton (bookplate) -- purchased from Newton Sale, 30 October 1941, lot 411, $45.
The two drawings, which appear to be preliminary drafts, do not appear in the published edition of Vanity Fair, though the young woman represented resembles Thackeray's depictions of Amelia Sedley (cf in particular illustrations to pp.107 and 447 of the 1848 edition).
