8° (215 x 141mm). 7[1]p. Stapled, green cloth case.

FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, LIMITED TO 100 COPIES. Although the Preface first appeared when The Nigger of the Narcissus was serialised in the New Review (August-December 1897), it was omitted when Conrad's novella subsequently appeared in book form. Of the 100 copies here printed, 40 were accidentally destroyed. Also known by the title 'The Art of Fiction,' the Preface voices Conrad's ambitions as a writer and his characteristic diffidence: 'Art is long and life is short, and success is very far off.' Ehrsam pp. 262 and 288; Wise Conrad 5n.
