8° (190 x 120mm). Half-title, 4-colour lithograhpic frontispiece map of Treasure Island, advertisement leaves dated '5R-1083'. (Very faint spot to title.) Provenance: M. I. Stevenson, (her signature on half-title, p. 1 inscribed, 'M. I.') -- Frank I. Hogan (bookplate). Exhibited: The Grolier Club (1950s exhibition label).
THE AUTHOR'S MOTHER'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, said to have been coveted and read so much by Stevenson's father, Thomas, that this volume became known as his 'pocket Bible'. The dating of the advertisement leaves identifies this volume as a third or fourth binding of the first edition. Whilst the '7' does appear (stamped later) in the pagination of p. 127, the 'dead man's chest' on pp. 2 and 7 is not capitalised. In this copy the numeral '8' is lacking from p. 83. McKay 241.
