FARADAY, Michael (1791-1867). Autograph letter (in 3rd person) to the 'Count de G. Liancourt' [Caliste Auguste, Count Godde de Liancourt?], Royal Institution, 13 August 1853, 2½ pages, 8vo.
A reply to an enquiry about bubbles in a wine glass: 'That more or larger bubbles may, to the eye, appear to form at the bottom is likely enough; for each bubble after leaving the bottom grows in size as it aascends through the fluid', continuing on the likelihood of the bubbles at the bottom being larger and more numerous, and concluding somewhat irritably, that 'the subject has perhaps now received all the attention which it merits or at least all that which Mr Faraday can give to it'.
Godde de Liancourt was the author of a number of works on historical and biographical subjects, and on the savants, and may have been provoked by curiosity to write to Faraday on a subject somewhat removed from Faraday's research into electricity.
Apparently unpublished (not in The Letters ed. F.A. James, 1993).
