The development of the vaccine against rabies. Pasteur refers to a letter from the wife of the doctor accompanying 'les petits américains mordus' [the American children who have been bitten], who has asked for someone speaking French and English to be sent to the dock. He expects his correspondent to be there.

Pasteur's vaccine was used for the first time in July 1885 on a nine year old child bitten by a rabid dog. By the end of the year over 350 people from all parts of Europe, North Africa and North America had been treated.
