Lot Essay

With its distinctive use of miniature furniture of advanced Neo-classical design allied with mythological subject manner, this clock can be accurately dated to circa 1809 and can be confidently attributed to the bronzier Savart. A design for a related clock in the Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris is inscribed Mr. Savart fabrique de bronze rue phelipaux no.11 (illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, 5.15.12, p.377). Variants of the basic Savart pattern are in the museo de Relojes in Jerez de la Frontera, in the Badisches Landesmuseum, Karlsruhe, and the British Embassy, Paris.
