An English brass lantern clock, second quarter 17th century
With 1 1/8in. wide Roman chapter ring, the centre engraved with leaves and thistles, single iron hand, with engraved shield and foliate frets, the front fret signed William Selwood at the Mermayed in Lothbury, side doors, with hoop and spurs to iron plate at rear (the plate with vacant holes, for alarm assembly?), the movement with balance wheel escapement and countwheel strike, the countwheel with male figure marking -- 15in. (38cm.) high

Lot Essay

Selwood is recorded as a Free Brother in the Clockmakers' Company in 1633 (until his death in 1653). However, previously he was a member of the Clothworkers' Company and in 1632 he took as an apprentice the eminent lantern clock maker Thomas Knifton.
