Dating from 1845, Guerrier tartare arrêtant son cheval epitomises the Romantic statuette and is one of Barye's most celebrated works. Referred to in early catalogues as Cavalier chinois, and with a more simplified helmet plume, later editions of the model show numerous variations, both in the harness of the horse and in the armour of the Tartar. Poletti and Richarme estimate the total number of lifetime casts of Guerrier tartare to be less than fifty. The modèle was purchased at the 1876 Atelier sale by Goupil and was subsequently edited with enduring success by Barbedienne. Later in the collection of Brazilian entrepreneur, Eduardo Guinle (d. 1941), the modèle was sold Christie's New York, 25 April 2003, lot 29 ($101,575).
Another cast of this model, likely by Barbedienne, was sold Christie's New York, 28 October 2003, lot 254 ($50,190).
