A LARGE ORMOLU-MOUNTED KINGWOOD AND MAHOGANY BUREAU PLAT
In the manner of Charles Cressent, Circa 1890
Of serpentine bombé form, the top inset with a black leather writing surface, above a central drawer applied with rocaille decoration, flanked on each side by a deep drawer applied with music-making putti and a dancing dog, framed within acanthus, with similarly decorated reverse, the sides each with a monkey on a rope swing held by two putti, the angles headed by espagnolettes, on tapering legs and heavy acanthus-wrapped scroll feet, the front right espagnolette bearing the inscription F. Linke

Lot Essay

With its distinctive child and monkey mounts and sumptuous espagnolette-headed angles, the design for the present bureau plat derives from the commodes au singe made circa 1745 by the celebrated ébéniste, Charles Cressent (d. 1768).
