Almost certainly designed by Rossigneux, one of the chief artists at the firm of Christofle during the second half of the 19th century, the inspiration for the lower section of this pair of candelabra may well have been the Roman Treasure of Hildesheim, one of the most important archeological finds of its time when it was excavated in 1868. Similar lion-pelts and Ionic supports terminating in paw feet are to be found on a guéridon exhibited by Christofle at the 1878 Paris Universal Exhibition (see Christie's New York, 24 April 2002, lot 80).
