Lot Essay

This embroidery draws together a variety of Oriental influences bearing witness to the taste for the exoticism of the East: the meandering vine border and elegant flowering shrubs recall contemporary Indian and Persian embroideries whilst the peonies, birds and spotted deer draw upon Chinese ornament. An English embroidered hanging worked with similar chinoiserie birds was sold in these rooms, 11 November 2003, lot 603
