Lot Essay

James Tassie (1735-1799) is best known for his portrait medallions of eminent contemporaries, modelled from life.

Tassie produced medallions of many distinguished men and women from the fields of politics, medicine, commerce, the arts, and the armed services. Many were Scottish.

Warren Hastings (1732-1818) was the first Governor-General of India from 1773-1784. He was a patron of Indian learning and showed a keen interest in Indian literature and philosophy.
