Lot Essay

Harvest Home is celebrated at Autumn's height on the day of the Autumnal Equinox, by which time the harvest had been gathered.

This picture has traditionally been thought to be by Alexander Maclean as inscribed on the plaque and possibly also in the indistinct inscription on the reverse. However the subject matter and style of this picture are unlike the work of two known artists of that name (1840-1877) and (1867-1940), and the artist would appear to be influenced by the Scottish painter of genre and history, Sir William Allan.
