Lot Essay

John 'Crump' Dutton, Lord Sherborne (1594-1653) was a hunchbacked, but popular, rogue. In 1634 he built Park Lodge on his Sherborne estate to fulfill his twin passions of banquetting and gambling. His duplicity was shown to best effect during the Civil War where he initially offered Charles I financial support and yet also attempted to broker a marriage between his nephew and Cromwell's daughter.
