The Dutchmen represent members of the envoyship of Captain Koops, who arrived in Nagasaki with the frigate 'Palembang' in 1844, in order to hand over a letter from King Willem II to the Shogun. In this letter, the King requests the opening up of Japanese harbours for international trade.
