The first journey of the Orient Express was launched on the 4th of October 1883. The Trans-Europe Express in which the railway companies of the Federal Republic of Germany (DB), France (SNCF), Switzerland (SBB-CFF-FFS), Italy (FS) and the Netherlands (NS) collaborated was initiated in 1957 by Ir. F.Q. den Hollander, the former director of the Dutch national railways. Belgium and Luxemburg joined the TEE network in 1964. The 'new' TEE Rheingold trains were in use from 1962 until 1987. The first class trains had luxurious dining facilities for which all crockery was specially designed.
