Illustrated is Van W. 23 entitled Sketches of Constantinople, showing the impression the first travels to Turkey (1888 and 1892) with the Oriënt Express left on Marius Bauer. The first journey to Turkey was paid for by art dealer E. J. van Wisselingh and resulted in a full suitcase of drawings. From these Bauer drew inspiration for at least fifty small etchings.
The drawings were exhibited in 1892 by Van Wisseling after the art dealer moved from the Hague to the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam in February of that same year.
