Lot Essay

William Pearson, to whom the paintings have traditionally been attributed, was a landscape artist and father of John Loughborough Pearson (1817-1897), the famous Gothic Revival architect who built Truro Cathedral. He is generally known as a watercolourist and etcher with a preference for panoramic compositions, but our picture is not incompatible with his work in style.
