(Some light spotting throughout, some mainly marginal thumb-soiling.) Contemporary half calf (front cover detached, worn). Provenance: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. In this splendidly illustrated work with life-size illustrations "Scarpa distinguished between inguinal and femoral hernia, describing the characteristics of each; he was also the first to call attention to the sliding hernia, and described the difference between congential and acquired umbilical hernias" (Norman).
