Each depicting the Seven Buddhas of the Past seated in a pyramidal arrangement created by the open framework of lotus tendrils and buds issuing from a leaf which fits into a tubular socket rising from a stepped socle raised on a rectangular platform with open sides

Lot Essay

A similar depiction of the Seven Buddhas of the Past raised above an hexagonal plinth is illustrated by d'Argencé, Chinese, Korean and Japanese Sculpture in the Avery Brundage Collection, Japan, 1974, no. 82, where it is mentioned that a somewhat similar group, with a three-four arrangement, was discovered inside the base of the tenth century pagoda at Jinhua, Zhejiang province.
