Hollow-modelled as a plump whimsical bird supported on two legs and a stump-like tail, its small head with hollow eyes picked out in black turned to the side opposite the circular spout

Lot Essay

Compare the slightly smaller bird-shaped ewer (12 cm.) of similar form, with open beak, illustrated by R. Krahl in Sammlung Julius Eberhardt - Frühe Chinesische Kunst, Hong Kong, 1999, p. 67.

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. C104b26 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
