Shuho Myocho is also known as Daito Kokushi, a monk of the Daio school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism during the Kamakura period. He founded the temple Daitokuji in Kyoto in 1319 and was given the name Daito Kokushi by Emperor Hanazono. His calligraphy is considered among the finest in the Zen tradition.
