A Peach-Shaped Helmet (Momonari Kabuto)
Edo period (18th-19th century)
The peach-shaped bowl constructed of hammered leather and lacquered brown and mounted with gilt-copper kuwagata dai carved with scrolling vines and pierced with hollyhock-shaped openings (aoi), holding lacquered-wood kuwagata (decorative horns) formed as flames and a maedate (forecrest) of three circles, the peak and the turnbacks applied with gilt-leather and gilt-copper hishi crests, fitted with a three-stage leather jikoro (neck guard) of false scales laced in blue and orange; with a russet-iron mempo (half mask) forged with cheek flanges and a single peg on the chin to hold the helmet cord, nose piece now missing, the throat guard lacquered-leather false-scale plates in five stages laced in blue, orange and purple
